Frequently Asked Questions About Olympus ENT Solutions

The Olympus ENT portfolio covers the main subspecialties of otolaryngology, including rhinology, otology, and laryngology. It includes medical equipment, visualization systems, and surgical instruments designed for functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), otologic microsurgery, and laryngological procedures. These solutions are structured for both operating room environments and outpatient diagnostic settings.

The therapeutic portfolio focuses on minimally invasive, tissue-preserving treatment procedures:

  • CELON: Utilizes bipolar radiofrequency-induced thermotherapy (RFITT) for the controlled, localized treatment of conditions such as chronic nasal congestion (turbinate reduction), habitual snoring, and tonsil reduction.
  • CELERIS: A single-use mini-microdebrider system designed for precise tissue removal in rhinology and airway interventions, offering efficient setup workflows for both operating room and outpatient environments.

The portfolio is supported by high-definition surgical and diagnostic video platforms designed for use in both operating rooms and outpatient clinics:

  • VISERA ELITE III Video System: A versatile imaging solution designed for surgical and diagnostic endoscopy, optimizing clinical workflows with high-definition and 4K visualization options.
  • VISERA S Platform (including the OTV-S500 processor): An integrated, space-saving HD imaging system that combines visualization capabilities with an intuitive setup, serving as a compact core solution for dedicated ENT suites and diagnostic settings.

Narrow Band Imaging™ (NBI™) is a proprietary optical imaging technology designed to enhance the visibility of vascular structures and mucosal patterns without chemical dyes. By filtering white light into specific narrowband wavelengths—blue (415 nm) and green (540 nm)—NBI™ utilizes the absorption spectrum of hemoglobin:

  • Blue light (415 nm): Penetrates superficially to highlight mucosal capillaries.
  • Green light (540 nm): Penetrates deeper to display larger submucosal vessels.

This structural contrast supports clinicians in laryngology, rhinology, and oncology pathways through:

  • Assisting in the identification of microvascular changes associated with suspicious lesions or early-stage carcinomas.
  • Supporting tissue demarcation during targeted biopsies or surgical resections.
  • Facilitating long-term surveillance and post-treatment patient monitoring.

Yes. Advanced optical imaging modalities, including NBI™, are integrated into compatible processors across both the VISERA S and VISERA ELITE III video platforms. This enables enhanced visualization during complex surgical procedures with rigid endoscopes as well as routine diagnostic examinations using flexible video rhinolaryngoscopes. The NBI™ mode can be activated directly via a programmable button on the camera head or scope handle.

Unlike monopolar systems, CELON’s bipolar configuration ensures that the high-frequency current flows exclusively between the two poles at the tip of the applicator, eliminating the need for a neutral patient plate.

The integrated power control unit continuously monitors tissue impedance during application:

  • Acoustic Feedback: Provides an audible signal when the intended degree of coagulation is achieved.
  • Automatic Power Cut-off: Stops energy delivery automatically to reduce the risk of over-coagulation and preserve surrounding healthy mucosal tissue.

Yes. CELERIS is designed as a compact, single-use system that operates without requiring a traditional stand-alone console. This setup allows for flexible deployment, making it suitable for performing appropriate rhinology and airway procedures outside the main operating room—such as in outpatient clinics, day-surgery units, or ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs).

Because the CELERIS handpiece—including the motor and cable—is entirely disposed of after the procedure, the requirement for reprocessing, packaging, and transporting reusable instruments is eliminated.

The surgical team receives a sterile, ready-to-use device for every procedure. This helps to:

  • Shorten Turnover Times: Reduces setup and waiting times between surgeries by eliminating instrument reprocessing steps.
  • Reduce Contamination Risks: Minimizes the risk of cross-contamination associated with reusable handpieces.
  • Ensure Operational Readiness: Avoids procedure delays caused by mechanical wear, damage, or reprocessing backlogs.

Many Olympus HD endoscopes and video rhinolaryngoscopes are designed for integration with standard Olympus surgical video platforms (such as the VISERA series). For specific compatibility matrices regarding light sources, camera heads, and video processors, please contact your local sales representative or technical support team.

All reusable ENT endoscopes must undergo cleaning and high-level disinfection (HLD) or sterilization between patient uses in accordance with national hygiene regulations and manufacturer instructions.

Olympus provides validated reprocessing manuals detailing:

  • Manual Pre-cleaning: Step-by-step procedures for bedside pre-cleaning and leak testing.
  • AER Compatibility: Compatibility specifications for Automated Endoscope Reprocessors (AER) and approved chemical disinfectants or sterilants.
  • Model-specific IFU: Always consult the specific Instructions for Use (IFU) for your exact device model.

Olympus supports clinical teams through structured evaluation periods, including on-patient demonstrations and product training led by clinical specialists.
